MEPC.398(83) in force since 1 September 2026

Prove your emissions where the engine runs

After a substantial modification, an installed engine has to prove compliance onboard. We measure the engine, help make it better and document the result, from the first talk with class to the approved Technical File.

What we do

Four ways we help you stay compliant

01

Retrofit and certify

Your retrofit certified and compliant from day one, with measurements onboard or at your test bed.

  • Amendment or new Technical File
  • Onboard and test bed measurements
  • Lower fuel use where the engine allows

02

Measure

Emission data that stands up to class approval, to IMO NTC 2008, ISO 8178 and EPA 40 CFR Part 1042 and 1065.

  • Onboard and test bed
  • NOx, CO, CO2, O2 and THC
  • Methane slip by heated FID with non-methane cutter
  • N2O, methanol and formaldehyde by FTIR
  • Annual SCR spot check
  • R&D and particulate matter on request

03

Advise

Guidance on IMO and EPA rules before the scope is fixed, when it saves the most time and cost.

  • MARPOL Annex VI and NTC 2008
  • MEPC.398(83), MEPC.399(83), MEPC.414(84) and other IMO resolutions
  • EPA 40 CFR Part 1042 and 1065
  • Test plan agreed before the test
  • Mentoring and education

04

Calibrate

Accurate emission test equipment for every survey, calibrated onboard or as laboratory calibration with certified gases.

  • Gas analyzers with certified calibration gases
  • Pressure, temperature, humidity
  • As-found and as-left certificates

MEPC.398(83) is now in force

A defined route for certifying an engine after a substantial modification. Read what it means for your project, and watch the video.

US California WIF project, final report

A public demonstrator project report, published March 2024. ME-Tech is named as responsible for the PM measurements.

We met customers at SMM Hamburg and Posidonia

SMM Hamburg, 1 to 4 September, and Posidonia, Athens, 1 to 5 June. Trade fairs are where projects start.

Amendment and Technical File

Your engine changed. We make sure the paperwork keeps up.

Six steps from first talk to approved file. We plan, measure and document, and we follow the file until class has signed, so you can focus on the conversion.

  1. 1

    First talk with class

We agree scope and requirements with your classification society before anything is planned.

    ResultScope agreed with class
  2. 2

    Pre-supportive document

A project description and a test plan with the measurement points, load points and any deviation from the test cycle, agreed through class before the test is scheduled.

ResultTest plan and measurement points agreed
  3. 3

    Preparation

We prepare the vessel and the test setup, and calibrate all equipment to NTC 2008.

    ResultSetup ready, equipment calibrated
  4. 4

    Optimisation

    If the engine needs tuning

Together with your engineers, we evaluate which measures suit your engine and operation, measure before and after, and set the engine up for fuel efficiency within the emission limits.

ResultEngine set up before the test
  5. 5

    Approval test

Measured onboard or at your test bed, witnessed by the class surveyor. We calculate the NOx and cycle values.

    ResultMeasured and witnessed values
  6. 6

    Approved file

Witness report, calibration sheets, emission calculations and the amendment or Technical File, fully documented. We follow it until class has signed.

Just for fun

Can you tune an engine?

Move three levers on a two-stroke engine and watch the flame, NOx, Pmax and fuel react. Find the lowest fuel under the limits.

It is only a game. It shows the principle, and real engines and real limits can differ. The right settings are found by measuring.
