Turbocharger cut-out on a two-stroke engine, documented for EPA

Turbocharger cut-out on a two-stroke engine in service, measured onboard and documented for EPA.

The starting point

Slow steaming changed the engine. We documented the change for EPA.

Many engines now run at low load for most of the voyage. A turbocharger cut-out helps them there, but it changes the NOx, and the change has to be documented before the ship can use it. We agreed the measuring method with EPA before the test, ran one campaign onboard and delivered the full documentation. The amendment was approved.

How we did it

  1. 1Route sorted

We joined early and guided the correct procedure, and adapted the project when the route moved from class to EPA.

  2. 2Method agreed first

The simplified measuring method was pre-approved by EPA before the test.

  3. 3Ship ready

Setup prepared onboard, crew informed, all equipment calibrated.

  4. 4One campaign

Reference runs and the cut-out in several tunings, measured in one visit.

  5. 5Complete documentation

Emission report, appendix and witness report. The amendment was approved.

What the customer got

No surprises at the test

We joined early and guided the right procedure, including the move from class to EPA, so the method was agreed before the test.

One visit

All load points and tunings measured in one campaign.

The full NOx job, taken off your hands

From the first talk with the authority to the final report.

No more testing than needed

We measure the changed load points and use existing data for the rest.

Measured onboard, documented for EPA.

Read the technical details
  • Described the project for class, and adapted it when the approval route changed to EPA
  • Agreed the simplified measuring method of NTC 2008 with EPA, including the open concerns, and got it pre-approved
  • Prepared the emission and performance setup on the vessel, and informed the crew
  • Calibrated all emission and ambient equipment before the test
  • Carried out the measurements onboard: reference runs at several loads, then the cut-out in several tunings, with a fuel sample
  • Prepared the emission report, the appendix and the witness report
  • Completed the documentation for the amendment to the Technical File
