Part-load optimisation of ferry auxiliary engines
Four-stroke Tier I engines optimised for part-load fuel consumption.
The starting point
Ferry engines rarely run at full load. We proved a part-load optimisation: lower fuel consumption, still within Tier I.
A ferry’s auxiliary engines spend most of their time at part load, where the fuel consumption can be improved. A new turbocharger nozzle ring and adjusted injection timing do that, but both affect NOx, so the change had to be proven onboard and documented in an amendment to the Technical File. We prepared the test and carried out the measurements before and after the change, in close cooperation with the engine designer. The result was documented and the amendment taken through approval with class.
How we did it
- 1Test plan agreed
The test application and the test plan prepared before the test.
- 2Reference measurement
NOx and performance measured onboard on the original setup, as the reference.
- 3Optimised setup
Turbocharger nozzle ring changed and the injection timing adjusted to the engine’s full potential.
- 4Amendment test
The final test onboard, showing that the engine still meets the Tier I NOx limit.
- 5Approval
Documentation for the amendment to the Technical File, taken through approval with class.
A joint effort with the engine designer, the ship owner and the ship’s crew.
What the customer got
A smaller CO2 footprint
Less fuel burned at part load means less CO2 for every hour at sea.
Lower fuel consumption at part load
Turbocharger and timing changes aimed at better fuel efficiency at part load.
Still within Tier I
The engine keeps its NOx compliance, proven by measurements onboard.
The whole amendment, prepared for you
We prepare the full amendment, and apply in your name where class requires it.
Fuel optimisation, proven onboard.
Read the technical details
- Prepared the test application and the test plan, and agreed them before the test
- Measured NOx onboard on the original setup, as the reference, alongside the engine designer’s performance measurements
- The turbocharger nozzle ring was changed and the injection timing adjusted to the engine’s full potential, to reduce fuel consumption
- Carried out the final amendment test onboard
- Showed that the engine still meets the Tier I NOx limit
- Prepared the documentation for the amendment to the Technical File and took it through approval with class
