Methanol conversion of a two-stroke engine

Tier II and Tier III with SCR in diesel mode, and methanol added in both Tiers.

The starting point

A two-stroke main engine, approved for Tier II and Tier III, was to run on methanol too.

The conversion changes NOx-relevant components and settings, which triggers the procedure for an amendment to the Technical File.

How we did it

  1. 1Class aligned

Scope and approach agreed with class before any test.

  2. 2R&D tests and tuning

Emission measurements guide the adjustment, just before the final test.

  3. 3Full measurements

O2, CO, CO2, NOx and THC, and methanol with its response factor.

  4. 4SCR verified

Verified to Scheme B of MEPC.399(83).

  5. 5Amendment approved

From measurements to approved file, with class on board every step of the way.

What the customer got

Compliance from the start

Class is aligned early, so the measurements and the documentation fit the approval process.

Methanol in both Tiers, diesel modes untouched

One amendment to the Technical File covers methanol in Tier II and Tier III. The vessel keeps its existing approved operation, SCR included.

Lower fuel consumption within the regulations

The engine is tuned before the test campaign, so the owner gets the best fuel efficiency the regulations allow.

No surprises on the approval day

The engine is optimised and ready when the surveyor joins.

One engine, two fuels, compliant in both Tiers and tuned for fuel efficiency.

Read the technical details
  • Joined before the scope was fixed and aligned the approach with class
  • Prepared the test plan and supporting documents before the measurements
  • Keeps the existing modes and adds methanol in both Tier II and Tier III
  • R&D tests just before the amendment measurement, with emission measurements and other data guiding the adjustment of the engine
  • Performs full measurements of the standard components: O2, CO, CO2, NOx and THC
  • Measures methanol with THC and its response factor
  • Verifies the SCR to Scheme B of MEPC.399(83)
  • Prepares the documentation for the amendment to the Technical File
  • Follows the amendment all the way through approval with class
