Turbocharger matching and new timing on a Tier I engine

Four-stroke Tier I engines, optimised with new turbocharger matching and timing.

The starting point

A four-stroke Tier I engine group got a cost-effective optimisation: new turbocharger matching and new timing.

The change affects NOx-relevant settings, which triggers the procedure for an amendment to the Technical File for the engine group.

How we did it

  1. 1Class aligned

Scope and approach agreed with class before any test.

  2. 2R&D tests and tuning

Emission measurements guide the adjustment, just before the final test.

  3. 3Full measurement

The big job is done once, in full, on the first engine in the group.

  4. 4Member engines

The member engines are updated the same way, with a parameter check and their own amendment.

  5. 5Amendment approved

From measurements to approved file, with class on board every step of the way.

The optimisation was developed together with a four-stroke specialist from the engine designer, and the tests were carried out with the ship’s crew.

What the customer got

A file built for class review

Documentation built for the approval process, so class has what it needs from the start.

Optimisation done once, used on every engine

One full emissions measurement, on the first engine. The member engines follow with a parameter check and their own amendment, at a substantial cost reduction.

Fuel you do not waste

Tuning before the final test gives the best fuel efficiency the regulations allow.

A smaller CO2 footprint

Less fuel burned means less CO2 from every engine in the group.

Optimisation that pays off, engine after engine.

Read the technical details
  • Joined before the scope was fixed and aligned the approach with class
  • Planned the R&D tests and measurements for the optimised engines, and tuned the engines before the final test
  • Performed the full emissions measurement on the first engine, the parent engine of the engine group
  • Updated the member engines in the same way, with a parameter check and their own amendment, and no full emissions measurement
  • Developed a check method, so a surveyor can identify that each engine complies
  • Prepared the documentation for the amendment to the Technical File
  • Followed each amendment through approval with class
