PM measurements
in the US California WIF project
Named in the public report as responsible for the PM measurements, onboard a container ship.
The starting point
We were responsible for the PM measurements in a California NOx demonstrator, onboard a container ship, in a test program approved by CARB.
A Californian project needed particulate matter measured onboard a container ship with a two-stroke main engine, with and without water emulsified in the fuel. We planned the campaign, ran the tests at sea, had the filters weighed by an accredited laboratory and delivered the results. The test program was approved by CARB, the California Air Resources Board, and the project was successfully concluded. See link below.

How we did it
- 1Campaign planned
Test plan, loads and procedure agreed before the voyage.
- 2Commissioned onboard
Our PM equipment, built for the project, installed and tested at sea on the engine.
- 3Reference test
PM measured on the normal fuel setup, at five load points from 10 to 50 percent load.
- 4Confirmation test
PM measured again at the same five load points, with water emulsified in the fuel, and set against the reference results.
- 5Weighed and reported
Filters weighed before and after the test by an accredited laboratory, and the results delivered.

What the customer got
A clear PM answer
The difference in particulate matter with and without water in the fuel, measured at sea.
To the standard
Gravimetric PM sampling with a dilution tunnel, to ISO 8178 and EPA 40 CFR 1065.
Independent documentation, built for the authorities
PM measured in a test program approved by CARB, with filters weighed by an independent, accredited laboratory.
Equipment that stays with you
We built the PM equipment for the project and hand it over with an introduction, so your own engineers can keep measuring PM.
PM measured at sea. Documented for the authorities.
Read the technical details
- Agreed the test plan, loads and procedure before the voyage, in a test program approved by CARB
- PM system to ISO 8178 and EPA 40 CFR 1065, with a heated probe and transfer line, a dilution tunnel and two filter holders
- Dilution ratio calculated from CO2 measurements, with the dilution tunnel and filters held at 42 to 52 °C
- Sampling in the exhaust funnel with a protection-hat probe pointing into the gas flow
- Reference test and confirmation test with water emulsified in the fuel, at five load points from 10 to 50 percent load
- A backup filter confirmed every PM measurement
- Filters weighed before and after the test by an accredited laboratory, with a modified ISO 8178 method
- Delivered the results and handed the equipment over with an introduction to PM measurement
