In June 2021 IMO (MEPC 76), adopted an amendment to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL Annex VI) that will require ships to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

The new procedures require all ships above 400gt to calculate their Energy Efficiency eXisting ship Index (EEXI). The requirement enter into force 1st of January 2023. The EEXI procedures correspond to the guidelines for newbuilding’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) which means that if the newbuilding’s EEDI is equal or less than for the required EEXI the existing EEDI can be used.

For ships with no EEDI Engine Power Limitation (EPL) could be your solution to reduce emission to comply with EEXI. EPL is often a fast solution and is a cost efficient way to comply with EEXI.

EEXI comes with the possibility to engine optimization with a re-certification but needs to be evaluated for the individual case.

The EEXI is the first step toward reducing greenhouse gas emission from ocean going vessels and will be a part of the annual operational Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and CII rating.

ME-Tech is your partner to identify which solution is the best for your ship

ME-Tech can prepare your vessel’s attained EEXI Technical File with relevant legal requirement and handle all class approval with the recognized classification society.
